Value Based Leadership

- an advanced leadership training program for young leaders 20-25 years old

This is what previous participants from the course Value Based Leadership say about the course.

• I think that the course is the most valuable learning experience I have ever had. I would recommend it to anyone eager to develop their leadership skills, but it needs to be someone who is really ready to do so and interested.

• I had heard before that the course was great, so I had kind of high expectations before. And the course hasn't disappointed me at all. It has been a mix of really interesting issues and I feel like I have grown as a person.

• It was a chance of a lifetime and I'm glad I was accepted to be a participant and as well I'm glad that I took the course. Just understanding values and their affect on my everyday life gave me so much more than I expected.

• I have learned a great deal of things about myself and especially about others. And I realized that this is a process that is on all the time and I can learn something in every situation.

• I think the course has been a lot more than I ever imagined, basically I had no expectations for it. I've felt very appreciated and special throughout the course. The best thing has, however, been the participants, because without them there wouldn't be the reflections and new ideas, because you are always kind of locked in your head a little.

• It has been quite a journey. In the beginning I did not know in which way I would personally develop, but now I notice that I have, in quite many respects. The course provided a challenging and motivating way to develop both as a person and - more specifically - as a leader.

• I think the biggest change has been how I see myself. I kind of knew what I'm like, but I was mostly seeing it as something that was affecting my personal relationships maybe not negatively, but I didn't see many of the beneficial sides of it. Through the course I've learned to see the goods sides of it, and I feel a lot more confident.

• It's easier to approach people when I have a better understanding of how they see me.

Don´t miss out on the chance to participate in something out of the ordinary. Value Based Leadership is a unique training program in that it combines expertise and experience from non-governmental organizations and the business world. The course consists of several parts; four long weekends (Friday morning through Sunday afternoon), a mentorship relation with a mentor from the private or public sector as well as individual and group assignments in between the different module weekends.

As a participant on the course you will learn about theories, models and abstract concepts related to leadership. However, the main purpose is not learning about models; it's learning about yourself and your role in groups and as a leader. The course methods consist of workshops, discussions, structured experiences and reflection, both individually and in groups.

Mentorship

Early in the programme you will get a mentor from the private or public sector. This is a person who has long experience from leadership and also often from the position of being a manager. He or she will be someone for you to discuss your particular challenges, thoughts and ideas with and at the same time contribute with his or her experience and knowledge.

A main focus of the course is on meetings. Meetings between cultures, organizations, generations and individuals. Our ambition is that you through that meeting will learn more, both about yourself and about others.

The first course took place in Sweden in 2007 and last fall in 2009 the first course took place as a co-arrangement between the Swedish and Finnish Guide and Scout Associations. Now it's time to do it again.

Course schedule

Module 1 - Leading a group

This weekend is about groups, group processes and how to manage them as a leader. We will also cover the topic of strategic leadership. Communication is one of the key skills in leadership and will be introduced as well.
22nd - 24th October 2010 (Friday 09.00 - Sunday 16.00) Kjesäters Folkhögskola, Vingåker, Sweden. We will provide lodging from Thursday night for those who have to travel far. This applies to all modules.

Module 2 - Leading for diversity

This module will begin with a leadership seminar in which participants from the private and public sector will discuss emerging leadership issues from a values perspective. The main part of the module will deal with values and diversity from different angles, always with a focus on the responsibilities and opportunities we have as leaders.
3rd - 5th December 2010 (Friday 09.00 - Sunday 16.00) Kjesäters Folkhögskola, Vingåker, Sweden.

Module 3 - Self-leadership

This is where it gets real tricky and at the same time interesting. Getting to know oneself can be a lifelong journey. Many great thinkers and leaders have stated that in order to lead others you have to be able to lead yourself, which may not necessarily by easy. Among the topics for this module are feedback, coaching and motivation.
28th - 30th January 2011 (Friday 09.00 - Sunday 16.00) somewhere in southern Finland.

Module 4 - Leading with values for profit

The last module is shaped in co-operation with a contributing business partner. The theme is business values, leadership from a distance and differences and similarities between non-profit and for-profit leadership. How can one live one's values and still make a profit in a company? Entrepreneurship is also a part of the fourth module.
3rd - 6th March 2011 (Thursday 09.00 - Sunday 16.00) location undecided.

Costs and course application

The cost for the course is 400 EUR. This covers tuition, room & board and travel expenses for the modules abroad. This means that Finish participants will have to pay for travel expenses in Finland and Swedish participants pay for travel expenses in Sweden. Does this sound confusing? Give us a ring or write us an email and we will explain what we mean.

Deadline for the course application is September 1st. Apply here.
